Hong Kong parents who have relocated overseas might think: “Since even foreigners are scrambling to learn Mandarin, should we also have our children give up Cantonese and just learn Mandarin and English directly?”
From the perspective of neuroscience and linguistics, the value of retaining Cantonese far exceeds our imagination. According to research and insights from Dr. Chen-ya Huang (腦神經科專科黃震遐醫生), a medical doctor and specialist in neurology, learning Chinese (especially Cantonese) offers unique and irreplaceable advantages for brain development and cognitive abilities. Let’s break down these three major, distinct characteristics.
1. Structural Advantage: Chinese Possesses Higher "Efficiency" and "Spatial Economy" than English
Many parents feel that learning Chinese characters is very difficult, but Dr. Huang points out that Chinese is actually a highly efficient language that relies heavily on reusing limited resources.
The High Efficiency of Radical Combinations: English needs to create countless entirely new words to express different concepts, whereas Chinese only requires a few simple components to combine into ever-changing characters. For example, just two Chinese components (Chinese radicals) can form 41 traditional characters, and three components can combine into 434 characters.
The Extension and Reuse of Concepts: Take the character “信” as an example. In English, it can be translated as “self-confidence”, “trust”, and “envelope” when 信 is paired with 封, and “superstition” when 信 is paired with 迷 to become 迷信. English uses words with completely different roots, but Chinese only needs to combine the character “信” with other characters (自信, 信任, 信封, 迷信) to precisely express these related concepts. This logic of character formation trains a child's cognitive ability to learn by analogy and to deduce other things from a single fact.
Space-Saving Layout and Reading: Chinese is extremely efficient in terms of visual processing. Under the same font size, a Chinese layout in Microsoft Word is usually one-third shorter than the English version. Although the ratio of Chinese-to-English text length is roughly 3:2, each Chinese character occupies the space of only about two English letters. In contrast, an average English word has five letters. This means that when children read Chinese, their eye-scanning efficiency is higher, and their brains can process a larger amount of information more rapidly.

Dr. Huang points out that, from a neuroscientific perspective, to process such precise pitch and tonal variations in Cantonese, the brain cannot rely solely on the left hemisphere, which is responsible for language logic; it must also heavily recruit the right hemisphere, which is responsible for processing music, pitch, and emotion.
Enhancement of Cognitive Flexibility: When children speak Cantonese, their neural networks require more frequent, widespread cross-regional coordination between the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Such a high-intensity neural stimulation is not only beneficial for language development but also promotes the child's overall auditory processing capacity and cognitive flexibility.
Strategic Advantage: The “Differentiation” of Cantonese is Because “Rarity Brings Value”
From a functional point of view, many people believe that as there are over a billion Mandarin speakers, its economic benefits must be the greatest if a child is sent to learn Mandarin. In reality, however, statistics show that around 100 million people worldwide use Cantonese. This is by no means a small number; it represents a massive international network with immense economic vitality and cultural influence.
Differentiation is the Key to Survival: In modern society, a skill’s universality may not necessarily allow the next generation to stand out in future competition. When the whole world is learning Mandarin, it becomes merely a given, a “baseline” item on a resume. Conversely, scarcity and differentiation are the keys to finding opportunities and breaking through in the future.
Unique Talent Positioning: In the future talent market, people with English and Mandarin language skills will be common; but those who possess English and Cantonese, as well as Traditional Chinese Characters, alongside a deep foundational understanding of Hong Kong culture, will be a relative minority. This linguistic differentiation allows the next generation relocated to the UK to have an irreplaceable position within multinational corporations or multicultural environments.
